Tree Lighting

While visiting Congress, we heard the National Christmas Tree lighting was happening that evening on the Ellipse opposite The White House. So, we closed the Botanic Garden and like natives jumped on the METRO to the stop nearest the Ellipse arriving in time to hear the band playing and somewhere in the distance The President saying something profound (I suppose).

The White House with the Christmas Tree (somewhere).

The entire Ellipse was surrounded with a double row of high snow fencing with officers on horseback patrolling the space between. There were two crowds, the invited one inside the fence, and the riff-raff tourists (us) outside the fence, along with more officers sand trucks parked bumper-to-bumper, and some chanting members of the 99%.

It's Lit!

When the switch was finally flipped and the tree was lit, we could hardly see it! It’s only a new 24’ tree replacing the old one that was blown over in a storm.

Disappointing, but a fun experience.
