SCAD

We drove into Savannah in search of SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design), new contemporary art museum we had found on the web.

Main Gallery

It was more than we ever expected. The last time we were here a group of old railroad buildings had been converted into a visitor’s center, the Whistle-Stop Café, and a college of architecture. Now, the newest and most exciting conversion was the SCAD Museum, opened just two months ago.

Gallery shows included painting, video, fashion, and an incredible installation by Liza Lou. Outside was the wonderful garden gallery. The architect had preserved the remaining sections of brick wall by supporting them with steel beams in a unique way.

Sculpture Garden

Also in the garden was a 1949 Spartan Mobile Mansion, built the same way as our Airstream, which had been repurposed as a sculpture by the same Liza Lou.
